Newhalem, Washington. 60 miles east of I-5 on SR 20 

Believe it or not, I have actually driven this 1926 Baldwin 2-6-2 steam locomotive. It was during the summer of '78 when we ran this train and 3 passenger cars between Sedro-Woolley and Concrete twice a day. Myself and dozens of volunteers spent the entire spring refurbishing the cars and bringing the locomotive up to operational working order. When we couldn't find any brake journals anywhere in the country, we asked the city of Sedro if we could cannabilize the locomotive they had on display in town. No problem. Well, it was a great summer , with hundreds of steam enthusiasts riding the rails and loving the sound of that old steam whistle, not to mention scaring the hell out of more than a few cows and horses along the little used rail line along the Skagit river. This 14 year old boy shared several lifetimes of memories that summer, not only with the grizzled old trainmen we seemed to attract, but with one especially astute 97 year-old pioneer of the upper Skagit Valley, Glee Davis. Mr. Davis built the very first power generator along the upper Skagit river, a paddlewheel alongside his cabin that still stands in the town of Diable to this day./ The plaque alongside the cabin say that the generator produced enough electricity to power one of today's hot plates!
